Mother's Day in Portugal

Hen 'N The Ivy has much more than just the typical flower arrangement. The floral shop offers exotic spring flowers and arrangements in baskets, corsages, and even Tiffany-style lamps. Customers can choose from fresh flowers, blooming plants, silk flowers and wreaths, and the shop also has candy, fruit baskets, and jewelry made by a local artist.

“A lot of people think of flowers (for Mother's Day), but there are so many other things you can do,” designer Joanne Gilpin said.

Flower arrangements start at $19.95. Gilpin recommended that customers order “the sooner the better to get the best choices.” The Hen 'N The Ivy will deliver until Saturday, May 7, and will be open longer hours that day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Google is celebrating Mother’s Day with a purple flower doodle. The letters of Google are all purple, with the exception of the L, which is replaced with a flower with purple petals and a traditional green stem. This doodle was used in many countries that celebrated the holiday last week on May 1, including Spain and Portugal.

Countries that are featuring the doodle on the search engine’s home page today include the U.S., New Zealand and India. Google has featured the flower that has been chosen to be given to mothers in their Mother’s Day doodle since 2000. Google includes flowers in the doodles because it sees a 450% increase in flower searches as the holiday approaches.

Mother’s Day is not only celebrated in the Netherlands on 8 May, but also in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Switzerland, Canada and the United States. In Spain and Portugal, Mother’s Day falls on the first Sunday of May. French and Swedish mother’s have their celebration on the last Sunday in May.

plans are for Mother’s Day, Maria said they are cleaning out the garage.

“We were going to go to Niagara Falls, but my husband has to work. He lays concrete now, not brick anymore. So we’ll stay home and clear the garage because the twins are having a birthday party Monday.
