Joaquim António Portugal Baptista de Almeida, CavIH (Portuguese pronunciation: [ʒuɐˈkĩ dɨ aɫˈmɐjdɐ]; born 15 March 1957) is a Portuguese actor. He has worked in Europe, Argentina, Mexico, the United States and Brazil in many film and stage productions.
Early life
Joaquim de Almeida was born in Lisbon, on 15 March 1957, son of João Baptista de Almeida and Maria Sara Portugal. At the age of eighteen, after attending the theater course at the Lisbon Conservatory (School of Theatre and Cinema) for two years, he left Portugal to continue his studies after the Conservatory was temporarily closed following the 1974 democratic revolution. He spent a year in Vienna, moving again, in 1976, to New York City where he studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute, a school for the performing arts frequented by famous actors such as Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Angelina Jolie.
Career
Film
After doing some theater, Almeida started his film career in 1982 appearing in The Soldier. His first significant role came in a 1983 movie, The Honorary Consul, where he starred alongside Michael Caine, Richard Gere and Bob Hoskins, being his first appearance in a American film. It was some years later that he made huge impact in his career, appearing in the Good Morning, Babylon, a movie, directed by Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, that opened the Cannes Film Festival in 1987.
Being fluent in six languages, he continued his acting career in several countries such as Portugal, England, Spain, France, Italy, Brasil, Argentina and Germany, working in numerous films.
In the following years he appeared in several known films. In 1994 Almeida starred in Phillip Noyce's movie, Clear and Present Danger, where he played a former colonel of Cuban military intelligence named Félix Cortez, starring alongside Harrison Ford and Willem Dafoe. That same year, he also appeared in another notable movie named Only You, playing a suave Italian businessman named Giovanni. Almeida's acting career continued at high level when he starred in the 1995 action thriller Desesperado with Antonio Banderas and Salma Hayek. In that year he also won a Portuguese Golden Globe award for best actor in the Portuguese drama Adão e Eva. He won the same award in the 1997 Portuguese romance Tentação and in the 2001 comedy O Xangô de Baker Street. Also in 2001, Almeida had a great supporting role in Behind Enemy Lines as Admiral Juan Miguel Piquet, the commander of NATO's naval forces. In 2007 he plays a sexy smoldering Michael, in the award winning indie film La Cucina. Next year, he starred in the biographical film Che: Part Two, playing President René Barrientos, and he also appeared in the drama film The Burning Plain as local man named Nick Martinez, starring alongside Charlize Theron and Kim Basinger. In 2011, Almeida played a corrupt businessman named Hernan Reyes in the fifth film of The Fast and The Furious series, titled Fast Five.
TV Series
Joaquim de Almeida has also worked on TV series, his first appearance was in Miami Vice, a season 2 episode, where he played a character named Roberto 'Nico' Arroyo. But his most notable work was on the critically acclaimed television series 24. He made twelve appearances in season 3 as one of the main villains, named Ramon Salazar, a Mexican narcoterrorist, who runs one of the largest drug smuggling rings in Mexico, and is also involved in drugs for arms sales. He made part of the set who was nominated for the 2005 Actors Guild Award for best Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.
Almeida also made appearances in several American series such as the adventure drama Crusoe playing Santos Santana in 3 Episodes, the police procedural CSI: Miami as Joseph Trevi on the season 5 episode "Man Down", the comedy-drama Parenthood appearing in 2 episodes as Matthew Biscali and he also appear in 7 episodes of the 2005 police drama Wanted. Even doing all this works, Joaquim de Almeida doesn't like starring in TV series.
Other Works
Joaquim de Almeida has also provided his voice for a number of video games and animated series. In 2004 he voiced the role of the villain Bane in the animated series The Batman. Also in 2004, Almeida voiced a character named Mattson in the video game The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and he also provides the voice of Hector in the 2006 video game Saints Row.
